I accidentally bought smooth recently because I was having a hard enough week that I decided to buy the no-stir kind for the first time in like 15 years. Same brand I usually buy, but they label the no-stir differently. I had a whole week of eating terrible, smooth peanut butter PLUS it tasted weird because it had coconut oil in it.
I have been making a lot of peanut butter cookies this week, so there is that. Anxiously awaiting reply tweet from the seductive bear company, tho I notice the jar labels in their header are different from mine...
Big fan of peanut butter and one of my earliest internet handles was based on a particular chunky brand. (I don't eat sweetened peanut butter anymore, only natural stuff now usually from Trader Joe's.) Alas it's been a while since I had chunky peanut butter (an attempt to help preserve my teeth longer).
Anyway I know you've mentioned your love of peanut butter in past mefi podcasts; I literally have a list of things to ask people about if I ever get to talk to them, and on that list it says "ask jessamyn about peanut butter" with a bunch of peanut butter related questions. So, I guess if you ever feel like having a mini discussion about peanut butter, let me know?
guys, pardon my ignorance but having never bought a single jar of peanut butter in my life (doesn't grow strong in my country - hope donny does not try to invade us because of this), why does one stir the peanut butter inside its jar?
I'm sure this brand has been in my local Hannaford forever, but I noticed it for the first time (and on an endcap, no less!) right after seeing this post. The bear is even more seductive in person.
@allanpoe What @caitlinburke said. Most supermarket brands (Jif, Skippy, Peter Pan) add partially hydrogenated vegetable oil so the oil doesn't separate, but these natural brands like Sexy Teddie don't do that, so you have to stir it.
@snarkout and @caitlinburke got it now.. I know I should try and buy a jar (there's a store that sells american products, even that shabby sherry cola) but I think my cholesterol will not like it..
@Allanpoe there is no compelling reason to try it unless you love collecting odd regional foods. If so, Marmite and Vegemite should go on there, too, I guess :)
@jessamyn Eff these people and their shitty, nonsensical graphics/labeling department. This is some straight up bullshit. Hopefully they reply and make good. I learned from my Dad to never underestimate the power of a single letter (or Tweet, I guess) to a manufacturer. I feel your smooth pain, but do you really go unsalted? Hopefully you get some justice either way.
@Allanpoe Go grab a jar ASAP, but only if it's natural – just peanuts and salt. Avoid the big name sugary crap (the ones @snarkout listed). I'm sure there must be good ones in Europe, or next time you're in the States, Trader Joe's makes cheap, good salted (or not) that's been my go-to for decades. One jar won't wreck your LDL count. As a man who has been known to eat PB by the tablespoonful straight from the jar, goop it on each bite of a whole banana, or sometimes PB-and-French Vanilla ice cream combos, I am available for gorging technique suggestions.
@caitlinburke Don't you dare lump PB in with those lesser spreads. My suspicion of your Cylonism is now higher than ever.
@NickSeam I'd reactivate my Slack for that. As long as we keep the smooth heretics out.
@NickSeam @snarkout My knee-jerk was kinda http://media.giphy.com/media..., but then I had a revelation – my smooth bigotry stems from the always-smooth Jif/Skippy of my youth. So I conflate sugary-awfulness with smoothness, which is unfair. Still #teamchunky, but I've made my peace with you smooth folk now.
@jessamyn [PB fist-bump] Looking further up-thread, I feel like I should seek out your MeFi podcasts now.
My wife is an almond butter fiend. There was a guy selling almond butter and other nuts and stuff in a stall at our local farmers market in Berkeley and that was the go-to. A week before we moved my wife asked me to "buy a bunch of almond butter from the guy" because she wasn't sure it'd be available in SoCal. So that Sunday at the market I bought all 17 jars he had on hand. The woman browsing the flavored almond samples looked up and said, "That must be good almond butter!" so I gave back one of my 17 so she could buy it and try it herself.
My wife didn't trust her almond butter with the movers, so we loaded it up in the SUV we'd rented to carry the wine down south because we didn't trust them with that, either.
"Winters Fruit Tree" is the brand. No sugar OR salt. We're down to one jar, but there'll be a road trip to Redding, Ca, for Thanksgiving, and I suspect there'll be a side trip to Winters for Almond Butter.
Update: I was making no progress eating my terrible smooth oogy feeling peanut butter so I sent @not_on_display home with it last night so I would buy more and not just kvetch. Today I woke up in a house without peanut butter, trying to remember the last time I did that.
Anyway, I'm here for your super chunky feelings.

I think I prefer the texture of fresh-ground. Smaller chunks.

PB is a very American thing, it's true.
