The roads tend to be like Charlotte around Charleston SC too, mainly because the cities are built around the local waterways and peninsulas. Took me a long time to get weird meandering roads into my midwestern head.
I guess no one has actually looked at a map of Seattle streets. Downtown, Belltown, Central District streets are a NW-SE oriented grid which confuses the fuck out of visitors on the regular when they get cross out of those neighborhoods into the N-S oriented grids. Also the North-South-NW-NE-SW-E-W designations fuck people up and take some getting used to.
I'm shocked Atlanta is so regular, but then most of the really ridiculous roads are outside the city limits. Inside the city they just change names every 6 blocks.
