“mosque in the city”, delhi, c. 1858 - felice beato
on a whim, i logged into an ancient deviantart account i’d created for my 35mm pics forever ago (and quickly abandoned). on the profile, i saw 2007-me had mentioned felice beato as a favourite photographer. i had kind of forgotten about my early fascination with him.
beato was essentially an early photojournalist, shooting widely across occupied india and much of asia. he also took some amazing portraits of samurai, royal courts, and courtesans in japan. his hand-coloured photographs are a sight to behold.
