This is one is relevant to my daily experience as someone whose spouse makes delicious smelling lunches every day when I'm fasting. More at source.

At my (pre-COVID) place of work, there's a table right outside my office. It became the designated place to put birthday cakes, morning donuts, cookies, and all the other terrible treats my fellow workers bring in to share with everyone.

I have a powerful sweet tooth, but I never eat any of it. It's just not in my diet, and I worked really hard to lose a ton of weight. Every time I go in or out of my office, it becomes an exercise of will to bypass these treats.

Would I be an asshole for complaining about this? So far, I've just decided to accept the little challenges it presents.

This smells like an Ayn Rand coloring book.

@mikenmar I feel you. It's a real challenge to the communal space, similar to how there's a discussion in academia right now about the centrality of alcohol in conferences and networking. People don't even know they're peer-pressuring you.

@Goshawk Yeah, I don't drink either, and I often feel obligated to join my co-workers for after-work drinks. The thing with the food doesn't feel to me like peer-pressure, but the alcohol thing has more of that. For whatever reason, people can understand why you don't want to eat that chocolate cake and aren't too curious about it, but they almost always want to know your reasons for not drinking alcohol.

the AI is definitely going to kill us when it becomes self aware if it has an issue with people just eating their own cake

@mikenmar seriously impressed. I have to exert my will power at the grocery store, because once the food is in front of me I will eat it. COVID has killed the communal food in the office and I hope it doesnt come back
