~half ton of books going into the mail

Continuing work on the Magic Castle (aka the house I grew up). Seemed to hit a tipping point when I made contact with folks at the Internet Archive who are taking 25 boxes of books to go into their library. I am not sure if I got a "friend of the family" deal or what, but they sent me boxes, tape (not this yellow stuff, Kate had that), Sharpies and labels. All I needed to do was assemble it all (thank you @not_on_display for shifting a lot of this) and hand it over to the UPS person next week sometime.

Just noticing in this picture this fucking closet NEVER GOT FINISHED in the back. It was built maybe 15 years ago? Fuck all of this deferred maintenance. Take my house, please.

Congrats on getting a colossal job done. Question: how much is the postage on one box of books?

wow!

Does the USPS not have Book Rate any more? or has its cost advantage been eroded to the point that you may as well use UPS?
jessamyn pro 2 years ago
@ardgedee USPS still has media mail which is lower cost, but these are going UPS because you can schedule them to pick up 25 boxes of books.

@fishtaco I do not know, IA is picking up the tab for these.

We just got a buyer for my mom's house. It's a conflicted feeling to let it go.

@Kevin Is it the house that you grew up in? I am a sort of tightly wound person and I do wonder a bit about how much of the *other* stresses I am feeling with this whole process is just me kind of not being in touch with the larger feelings about letting my childhood house go.

@jessamyn pretty much. I was 13 when we moved in. MOm & Dad did a huge addition to it in the 2000's. It's really stamped with my Mom's personality & opinions.

Winding up most of her estate hasn't been an issue for me, but when we had to remove things she'd selected like the carpet and paint over the colors she loved, to make the house "salable" was the first time I felt grief since a few months after she passed.

I thought about buying it from my siblings for awhile but I realized that would be a mistake for me. It's a huge house (now, not so much growing up there) and living there alone I'd probably end up like Howard Hughes.

@Kevin Oh wow I totally understand that. My dad built a lot of the insides of our house and he moved out in 1981-ish. My mom did a few small renos but not big things. My sister and I both had the option to move in (I don't live nearby and didn't want the lifestyle change, she has a house she already likes) and, yeah, my mom was kinda married to the weird old place but neither me or my sister wanted to be.
