I've always loved cigars, and I thought maybe I should try or get into pipe smoking, but I don't know if it was lack of patience, or inexperience but I found that my ham-fisted attempts to be less than satisfactory. (I recall inhaling an awful lot of air when trying to pack tobacco into the bottom of the pipe).
@poorusher it does take a little while to get into the rhythm of it, and packing it too loosely or too tightly can make for a lot of pulling and little smoke.
!! I miss my pipes too—I have them in some box somewhere. For tobacco I loved Erinmore Flake, Latakia, Black and Gold—nothing sweet. Smoking a pipe on a cold beach is pretty great.
@kafkaesque yes! latakia was a go-to for me, and i often had the nording hunter blend that had a lot of latakia in it. i don’t think i ever tried erinmore before i quit, but it looks like a blend i would have enjoyed.
I love the shape of the grabow bent stem one, love to join the shk! I have never once smoked a cigarette, but I was introduced to pipe smoking at 25-ish by my friend from Minneapolis, and I still smoke every once in a while, maybe once or twice a month, and love the ritual of it. Sadly, I just recently lost my grandpas old straight-stem "architect style" pipe on a parking lot in Grimstad. Hate it!
@hassebasse it is a nice ritual and i sometimes miss it. sorry to hear you lost that pipe! i had a straight-stem one like that forever ago that broke after i dropped it too many times; still miss it too.
I had never heard of Grabow pipes. Then I looked at their website and noticed that it's _Dr_ Grabow. There many pipe brands with medical sounding names like that. But in the EU that kind of name is illegal for tobacco products.
I guess that explains why I never encountered them.
@joost yep, the “dr. [xyz]’s pipes” was a big trend in the late 19th and early 20th century america, with a bunch of brands claiming “health benefits” of pipes (there was a lot of medical quackery in drugstores then, and there still is now, haha!)
i looked just now, and i’m surprised to see they still use the “Dr.” in the name here too, honestly.
