Huh. I never thought the original star wars was an allegory of the vietnam war. Who were the sandpeople? What were the droids supposed to represent? What side were wookies?
@jonson I don't think it went to the level of 1-to-1 "these people are this..." but Lucas has said the rebels are Vietcong and Palpatine is Nixon. I always thought it was more a WWII think with Stormtroopers, but this works too.
@Kevin My understanding is that one of the many influences on Lucas were WWII films with bomber and fighter pilots that were shot in the same way as all the space battle stuff in Star Wars (including guy manning the turret and shooting down enemies).
I don’t think the guy was interested as an artist in smuggling any complex political themes into his films - his primary goal was to make a box office hit.
The prequel movies are a pretty obvious allegory for the Iraq war, so if he wasn't interested in politics during the start of the original trilogy he was interested later. And as we all know he had zero compunctions about retroactive changes to the earlier movies, no doubt including political themes.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
