I am, as I think I've said before, on Team Archive in terms of how I hope this lawsuit works out.

I would also, however, like to state for the record because this is a topic near and dear to me, that most library ebook lending as it happens right now will not be affected one iota from this lawsuit, no matter what the outcome. THAT said, there are potential opportunities for ebook lending in libraries in the future that might be shut off if the IA loses this lawsuit. Fight for the Future (who designed this campaign) is a good place to put donations.

@jessamyn Thanks for clarifying! Some of the rumblings from the publishers make me feel like they won’t be happy until everyone has to buy books, so I am worried about the future. :(

@macmanx Yeah publishers are kind of pissed off that libraries even have the right to lend books and have been trying very hard to put as many limitations as possible on lending ebooks. And I should clarify this is almost all Big Five publishers, most small publishers are either pretty chill about this or actively work to make ebook lending work for people.

@jessamyn Yeah, I've seen many small publishers offer new book giveaways if you pre-order or recommend the book to your library. I like those publishers. :)

@macmanx I do find that most of the online narrative about this (from all sides) sort of misses the point in the name of rhetoric, Authors should get paid fairly and so should publishers. Also there needs to be some sensible plan for ebook lending that is more equitable for everyone. The Archive should play nicer with publishers and authors and I really suspect that may be what comes out of this.
